24 Books I Want to Read in 2021

Last year, I posted a list of 20 books that I wanted to read in 2020. I was a bit apprehensive that this yearly TBR format wouldn’t work for me but, while I didn’t read all the books mentioned on the list, I still managed to read 17 of them. Since my first goal was to read half of those books, I consider that a success and I would like to do this challenge again in 2021!

As always, the goal with this type of challenge is to focus on reading books that I own and that I think I’m going to enjoy. I have a very odd habit of keeping books that I’m very excited for “for the perfect moment”. I don’t know why I do that to myself, I shouldn’t set aside some books for some unknown occasions, if I want to read them then… I should read them.

The list was hard to narrow down, my first attempt had more than 70 titles in it, then I narrowed it down to 48 and I’m now down to 24. I can’t take another book off because I’m really excited about every single one of them! I’m pretty sure I won’t read them all in 2021 but if I manage to read 18 of them, I will be very happy! 😀

2020 Releases

I posted a list of Ten 2020 Releases I wish I had read in 2020 a few days ago but here are five titles that I will do my best to read in 2021!

Series to continue or To finish

I have the terrible habit of never finishing series so that’s why there are so many sequels on that list. If I manage to read all of them, I will complete 5 series this year! 😀

Backlist Books

This list is a blend of series I have been meaning to start for years, older titles and releases that I never got to. It’s crazy to think that I even pre-ordered some of the books on this list and I still haven’t read them… (I’m looking at you The Race and Sisters of the Vast Black!!)

    1. I haven’t read your review of it yet but I have seen your rating! 😂 I’m still intrigued by it, I quite enjoyed The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet but A Close and Common Orbit was very average, I want to know if the third book is going to be better or not.
      I have high expectation for Exhalation and The Left Hand of Darkness, if I had to do a Five Stars Prediction list, I would say that I expect them both to be five star-reads! 😀

Experience taught me (the hard way…) not to rely too much on “want to read” lists, because I’m oh-so-easily distracted by new arrivals and recommendations from my fellow bloggers, so that no matter how many new year propositions I try to make, I rarely fulfill them – unlike you who indeed made a truly good inroad in your 2020 list! 🙂

    1. 😂😂 I completely understand that! I think I tried to do a yearly TBR in 2018 or 2017 and I failed completely, I don’t know why my 2020 list worked so well for me last year but I hope 2021 will be a success as well.
      (But I’m definitely also easily distracted by new and shiny titles and by other bloggers recommendations, it’s a hard balance to maintain!)

  5. A fabulous list! The City We Became and The Vanished Birds are both on my Must Purchase list, but I have to get through at least some of the stuff I already have on my shelves first. *sigh*

      Thank you! I can’t wait to read them in 2021 (and if you get a hold of them before I read them, we can maybe do another round of buddy read? 😇 (yes, I’m already trying to enroll you as my official reading buddy even when we are currently reading something together, 😂😂))

  6. Ooh, what a dashing set of books, many of which are on my TBR too. And if there’s one series I’d personally insist on you continuing — that’s Leckie’s Ancillary Justice series. I think it’s a great series, mainly because of the worldbuilding, although I know some readers haven’t liked it that well.

  7. Amazing list. I loved Kindred–read that back in high school and I think it really changed my perspective on a lot of things. It’s definitely a book that’s stuck with me these many years.

    I’d also LOVE to get to Network Effect this year. I can’t believe I haven’t read it yet!

    1. I’m happy you loved Kindred, I have been meaning to read it for years but I never seem to pick it up and I really want to finally read it this year (and then read many more of Butler’s books!)
      We all need Murderbot in our lives. 😉 I’m looking forward to Network Effect because I have heard that ART is in this book again and I live for ART and Murderbot’s interactions!

    1. I finished it yesterday and I really liked it!! It was a great conclusion to the series, it had the elements that I loved in the previous two books – the atmosphere, the fascinating characters, the magic and the politics – and I loved the direction the story took! 😀
